Upside Down Numbers
Digits look different when turned, and not all of them can be written in Unicode.
| Number | Upside down | Code | Name |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ⇂ | U+21C2 | Downwards Harpoon With Barb Rightwards |
| 2 | ᘔ | U+1614 | Canadian Syllabics Carrier Ju |
| 4 | ߈ | U+07C8 | Nko Digit Eight |
| 5 | ဌ | U+100C | Myanmar Letter Ttha |
| 7 | ㄥ | U+3125 | Bopomofo Letter Eng |
The other five digits
Only 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 need a borrowed symbol. The rest are easy: 0 and 8 look the same turned over, 6 and 9 swap places, and 3 becomes Ɛ (U+0190, Latin Capital Letter Open E). That gives the full row 0 ⇂ ᘔ Ɛ ߈ ဌ 9 ㄥ 8 6 for the digits 0 to 9.
Why turned numbers spell words
On a seven-segment calculator screen a turned 0 looks like O, 1 like I, 3 like E, 4 like h, 5 like S and 7 like L. Typing 07734 and turning the calculator round gives hELLO. The symbol table above is for text; the calculator trick only uses digits.
Mixed text
A flipped number reverses the order too: 2026 becomes 9ᘔ0ᘔ when you copy it from the generator. If you are writing something that must still be read as a number, such as a price or a phone number, keep the normal digits.
